With the tropical temperatures, the mosquitoes also appear. In addition to annoying buzzing, mosquitoes can leave knots from itchy bites on your body. but how do you keep those pesky insects at a safe distance?
Anti-mosquito agents that work
Mosquitoes are attracted to your breath (carbon dioxide) and the odorants that your body secretes. These concentrations differ from person to person, which also explains why some people are more bothered by mosquitoes than others. So the goal is to deceive the mosquitoes. You can do that in several ways:
- Mosquito lamp
A mosquito lamp or insect lamp spreads blue UV light that attracts insects, including mosquitoes. If the mosquito flies against the grille of the lamp, it is electrocuted. - DEET
DEET or N,N-diethyl-meta-toluenamide is an organic compound that disables mosquitoes' odor sensors. As a result, they can't smell you well and the chance that you will be stung decreases. DEET is available in various concentrations as a gel, spray or lotion. To be effective, a percentage between 30% and 50% is recommended. The higher the concentration, the longer the action time.
Vulnerable persons such as children under the age of 13, pregnant and breastfeeding women should not use the product. They can opt for a remedy based on lemon-eucalyptus extract (Citriodiol).
However, don't waste your money on wearable DEET items, such as wristbands or anklets, as they have been shown to be ineffective against mosquito bites. - Icaridin
Also known as Saltidin, Picaridin or KBR 3023, Icaridin is effective against various types of mosquitoes that can cause diseases such as malaria, zika, yellow fever and dengue. The World Health Organization also recommends the drug. - Citriodiol
Citriodiol (PMD) is a major component (usually 64%) of a natural essential oil derived from a particular eucalyptus tree. It is used as a natural alternative for people who cannot tolerate DEET. The products with lemon eucalyptus as an ingredient are the most effective. - Mosquito net
A mosquito net is stretched over your bed and that acts as a barrier between you and the mosquito. Make sure that it is just fine and long enough. - Screens in windows and doors
A mosquito net in the door works on the same principle as the mosquito net. While they still allow enough air to pass through, they physically keep mosquitoes away. Here too, it is best to go for good quality: fine-mesh screens that close well. - Electric fly swatter
You can electrocute the mosquito with an electric fly swatter. Since mosquitoes move relatively slowly, there is a good chance that you will catch them.
In addition, there are a lot of products that have a reputation for repelling mosquitoes, but are less effective or not scientifically proven, such as vitamin B1 or products with citronella. For the best results, stick to the above tips.
