e-cigarette smoking

Is the electronic cigarette (e-cigarette) a risk factor for erectile dysfunction? In any case, there is a link. It is therefore important that users are aware of this possible consequence.

Even though studies on long-term effects are still lacking, it seems increasingly clear that in terms of health, electronic cigarettes are preferable to tobacco products. Many experts and a number of health authorities believe that e-cigarettes can help quit smoking, especially when nicotine substitutes do not produce the desired result.

Lung and cardiovascular effects

However, one should not minimize the use of electronic cigarettes: it is not a harmless product that is free of risks. Research has already shown harmful lung and cardiovascular effects. An American team (New York University) also points to a possible link with erectile dysfunction.

The team examined data from several thousand men over the age of 20, about 5% of whom used the electronic cigarette (half used it daily). The incidence of erectile dysfunction was recorded on the basis of a questionnaire completed by the participants (so this method of self-reporting is less reliable than a medical diagnosis). The analysis took into account classic risk factors for erectile dysfunction (including smoking in the past and present) showed:

  • Users of electronic cigarettes are twice as likely to have erectile dysfunction, compared to those who have a similar profile and have never used this device.
  • A history of cardiovascular disease and old age (over 65) increase the risk in both groups (e-cigarette users and non-users) even more.
  • Conversely, regular exercise limits the risk (also in both groups).

Purpose: no smoking, no electronic cigarettes

The researchers say the following: "The use of an electronic nicotine delivery system appears to have a link with erectile dysfunction, independent of other risk factors. While one assesses these tools primarily for their potential to quit smoking, one should inform users of this possible consequence for erectile function." Importantly, if you use the e-cigarette as an alternative to regular cigarettes, you give them both up at some point. It is absolutely not recommended to continue smoking tobacco while using the e-cigarette. And non-smokers are advised not to try the electronic cigarette on the assumption that it does not pose any risks.
